State Department Restricts Visa Interview Waivers

4 Mar

The U.S. Department of State (DOS) recently announced significant restrictions to its nonimmigrant visa interview waiver program. The DOS has rescinded its December 2023 interview waiver policy, replacing it with much narrower eligibility criteria.

Under the previous policy, the DOS allowed most nonimmigrant visa applicants to request interview waivers if they had been issued any nonimmigrant visa within the past 48 months (excluding those whose only previous visa was a B visa). Under this new policy, interview waivers are now primarily limited to diplomatic or official-type visa applicants and those renewing a visa in the same category that expired less than 12 months prior.

To be eligible, applicants must also (1) apply in their country of nationality or residence; (2) have no previous visa refusals (unless such refusal was overcome or waived); and (3) have no apparent or potential ineligibility issues.

This policy change may significantly increase wait times for in-person visa interviews at consulates worldwide. Therefore, it is recommended to plan ahead of time. If your visa expires within the next 12-18 months, consider applying for renewal as soon as possible. Even if you appear to meet the interview waiver criteria, be ready for a possible in-person interview request.
